Message for Divorcing Parents

A message for divorcing parents - if you have children under the age of 18 and you are getting divorced, you are going to be concerned about how the divorce will affect them. I have good news for you – you can take action to avoid the serious negative consequences that are associated with divorce and children.

Studies show that the cause for serious negative physical and mental health affects in children isn’t divorce but long term conflict between parents. Divorce is simply the cause of the long term conflict in many instances. But it doesn’t have to be that way. By choosing an out-of-court divorce process, such as mediation and collaborative practice, you will help your children avoid these negative consequences.

In-Court divorce is adversarial in nature and increases the conflict between parents. The out-of-court process isn’t adversarial and reduces conflict by helping parents to resolve their divorce through communication and collaboration. Reducing conflict allows parents to transition into their new role as co-parents after the divorce is final, which will help your children adjust to their post-divorce lives.

So don’t despair when a divorce is in your future. Divorce is the time to take control over the well-being of your children. You can read more about the issues related to divorce and children in my blog, “the Collaborative Mindset”.
